Who Are These People?

Hey there! We’ve noticed that folks who have lived in Clinton for years don’t know much about the church of Christ. Well, we want to change that, and it’s one reason we’ve been sending out the House to House / Heart to Heart paper to our community.

So, what is the church of Christ all about?

In a nutshell, members of the church of Christ just want to follow the teachings of the Bible—nothing more, nothing less. This is the fundamental difference between us and our religious neighbors. Many religious groups submit to creeds, confessions of faith, mission statements, or decrees from human leaders.

But we don’t. We just have the Bible.

After all, we first learn about God, sin, heaven, hell, and other religious topics from the Bible, so why would a person need anything more? Why not go straight to the source and stick with it?

Call us crazy, but we believe that only the Bible will make Christians as God intended. We also believe that the religious unity that Jesus wants (John 17:20-26) can only be achieved by following the Bible and the Bible alone. Isn’t this the safest and most reasonable approach to take? (Check out Gal. 1:6-9 and Rev. 22:18,19.) If God’s desire for unity was fulfilled on Earth today, there would not be a multitude of churches in our community. Rather, there would just be one, and it would just consist of Christians using the Bible as their only guide!

And that’s all we want to be. Just plain and simple Christians—-in word, in deed, and in worship—-like the first-century Christians we read about in the New Testament.

About the church of Christ

The church of Christ (Romans 16:16) is THE church of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:18). Those who have been added to the Lord’s church (Acts 2:47) through repentance (Acts 2:38), confession of faith in Christ (Acts 8:37), and immersion in water for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) are called Christians (Acts 11:26), and as such, they are members of the body of Christ (1st Corinthians 12:27). All such individuals, if faithful to the Lord unto death (Revelation 2:10), will live eternally (Matthew 25:46). Those Christians that assemble for worship (Hebrews 10:25) at the church building in Clinton, Illinois on Business 51 South constitute the Clinton Church of Christ.

The church exists to bring glory to God the Father through the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:21). The purpose of the church is to preach the gospel to the lost and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), as well as to help its members grow in the grace and knowledge of God (2nd Peter 3:18). The gospel, when it is obeyed (2nd Thessalonians 1:8), is the power of God to salvation (Romans 1:16). The aim of the church of Christ is to worship and serve God Almighty (Matthew 4:10) as His holy word authorizes (Colossians 3:17) and not to cling to the vain traditions of men (Matthew 15:9).

The church of Christ has no earthly head, but its spiritual head is Christ (Ephesians 1:22). The church is not a denomination since such would imply religious division which is sinful (1st Corinthians 1:10). The church of Christ is governed by the Bible, the inspired word of God Himself (2nd Timothy 3:16,17). Its members are simply called “Christians” although some serve additional roles as elders (1st Timothy 3:1-7), deacons (1st Timothy 3:8-13), or evangelists (2nd Timothy 4:5).
